DAMOH

Damoh District, nestled in Madhya Pradesh, India, offers a rich tapestry of economic opportunities . Let’s explore its key facets:

Cradled between the Vindhya Range and the Satpura Range, Damoh boasts rolling hills, verdant forests, and fertile plains. The Narmada River meanders through its heart, enhancing its natural allure.

Damoh enjoys seamless connectivity. The Bina-Katni railway line traverses the district, facilitating efficient movement of goods and passengers. Major highways like NH-44 and NH-12A intersect here, linking Damoh to neighboring cities.

The Jabalpur Airport, approximately 150 kilometers away, serves as the gateway to the skies. Its connections to major cities bolster business prospects.

Mining: Damoh’s sandstone quarries yield exquisite Bhander Sandstone. Used in historical monuments and modern structures, this stone contributes significantly to the local economy.

Industrial Development: While Damoh’s industrial landscape is modest, it hosts small-scale units engaged in weaving, dyeing, bell metal vessels, and oilseed milling. These industries sustain livelihoods and foster local craftsmanship.

Agriculture: The district’s fertile soil nurtures diverse crops—wheat, soybeans, gram, and lentils. Notably, the Tendu leaves, used for making bidis, thrive here.Damoh’s unique One District One Product (ODOP) is Gram. Chosen for its resilience, nutritional value, and market demand, chickpea celebrates Damoh’s agricultural heritage while empowering farmers and promoting sustainable growth

One District One Product Damoh, Madhya Pradesh

ODOP Damoh – ODOP Gram

Madhya Pradesh is always at the leading position in India in pulses/Grams production. Gram commonly known as chickpeas or Bengal gram is the main source of protein in Indian kitchens and is widely used across India. Due to the deficit, India is one of the largest importers of Pulses including Grams in the world. So, the future for the farmers and processors for the growing, storing, and processing of Gram is very bright. In India, the main types of chickpeas are cultivated viz., Desi and Kabuli in the ratio of 3:1 and chana accounts for about 45% of total pulses produced in the country. Similar to the case of other pulses, India is the major producing country for chana, contributing to over 75% of total production in the world The District of Damoh has chosen Gram as the ODOP Product.

SWOT Analysis

Strengths

  1. India is the largest producer, consumer, importer, and exporter of pulses in the world. Madhya Pradesh is the second largest producer of pulses after Rajasthan in India. So the ecosystem of production, processing, packaging, and marketing of pulses and Grams is being developed in Madhya Pradesh.
  2. Focused state policy framework towards enhancing crop productivity and providing incentives to investors for agricultural infrastructural growth and a conducive environment for industry. With the government investing heavily in the market linkage for agricultural produce, Gram is one of the focus crops for the state.

Weakness:

  1. India is a pulses deficit country and the largest importer in the world. So exports of the pulses are always on the watchlist subject to supply and demand in the local market.
  2. Even though Madhya Pradesh is the second largest producer of pulses, its strength in exports in Grams is not exploited to the fullest extent.
  3. Farmer Education: Significant investment is required in education and relevant support services to give small & marginal farmers the necessary skills and knowledge to increase productivity, improve the quality of the produce, and reduce waste. Poor Market Linkage, and packaging Techniques for fresh produce.
  4. Farmers are Not Aware of the Standard Quality Norms Acceptable in International Markets and Grading & packing units for exports.

Opportunities:

  1. Large-scale investment in food processing industries, increasing production through planned irrigation, entry of new entrepreneurs, and awareness about exports are creating new opportunities for exports.
  2. District Damoh established several FPO, Brands, processing, and packaging units for Gram creating large opportunities in import substitution and export generation.
  3. Processing of Gram: Snacks, Dal, Besan, etc and Snacks-based industry, Dal mill.

Threats:

  1. The growing domestic price of pulses always creates suspicion in the export market of pulses.
  2. Farmers in the region due to local conditions sometimes divert towards rice and paddy in place of pulses.
  3. Importing regulations for Agri and food products are different in different countries.
  4. Less awareness about market and packing techniques.
