KHANDWA

Khandwa District is located in the western part of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is characterized by diverse geography, including fertile plains, hills, and forests.

The district is rich in mineral resources such as limestone, sandstone, and granite, which support various industries including cement manufacturing and stone quarrying.

Agriculture is the primary occupation, with crops like wheat, soybeans, maize, pulses, and oilseeds being cultivated.

The major exports from Khandwa District include agricultural produce such as soybeans, wheat, and maize, along with minerals like limestone.

As for the ODOP product, "Onion" is selected. Onion is known for its multiple use in food products. Selecting Onion as the ODOP product could be justified due to its vast utilisation significance, potential for farming promotion, and the preservation of traditional farming techniques.

One District One Product, Khandwa

Onion

Onions are versatile and nutritionally rich vegetables. They are a potent source of antioxidants, particularly quercetin, which supports heart health and reduces inflammation. Onions contain vitamins C and B6, crucial for immune function and neurotransmitter production. Their sulfur compounds contribute to detoxification processes and may lower blood pressure. Onion is the most essential vegetable commodity along with garlic and tomato. Processed onion in the form of dried powder and flakes has a huge export market in the world. The District of Khandwa has a good production of onion and also developed a good ecosystem of processing and exporting to the world market. Khandwa selected onion as ODOP product.

SWOT Analysis

Strength-

  1. India is the 2nd largest producer of onion, in the world after China. India produces all three varieties of onion – Red, Yellow and White. Year-Round Supply- Grown in western, northern, and southern parts. Madhya Pradesh is one of the Largest Onion-producing states in India after Maharashtra and Karnataka.
  2. The life of onion is much longer than tomato and other green vegetables. Taste and aroma of white dried onion is not much different from fresh white onion made it more suitable for processing and trading.

Weakness:

  1. Even though Madhya Pradesh is one of the largest producer of onion, its strength in exports in garlic is not exploited to the fullest extent.
  2. Agro products are highly quality-sensitive, perishable, and have cultural aspects. Indian agro-processed products are facing problems in getting international food standardization like USFDA, Halal, EU MRL etc.

Opportunities:

  1. Large-scale investment in food processing industries, increasing production through planned irrigation, entry of new entrepreneurs, and awareness about exports are creating new opportunities for exports.
  2. District Khandwa established several farmers units, Brands, processing, and packaging units for garlic which will create large opportunities in import substitution and export generation.

Threats:

  1. The growing domestic price of spices always creates suspicion in the export market of pulses.
  2. Farmers in the region due to local conditions sometimes divert towards other products in place of garlic.
