MANDSAUR
Situated in southwestern Madhya Pradesh, Mandsaur District occupies a strategic geographic location, bordered by Rajasthan to the west and Neemuch to the south.
The district benefits from robust transportation infrastructure, with the Mandsaur railway station serving as a key junction on the Ratlam-Kota railway line, facilitating connectivity to major cities like Jaipur and Bhopal. National Highway 52 traverses through the district, providing vital road connectivity to neighboring regions. While the district lacks direct air routes, the nearest major airport is Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport in Indore, approximately 160 kilometers away.
Mandsaur's economic landscape is diverse, with a significant focus on agriculture, small-scale industries, and trading. However, the district's economic identity is deeply rooted in the cultivation of garlic. Garlic has been designated as Mandsaur's One District One Product due to the region's conducive climate, fertile soil, and expertise in garlic cultivation.
This initiative aims to leverage Mandsaur's agricultural strengths, promote sustainable farming practices, empower local farmers, and position the district as a leading producer of high-quality garlic in the region.

Garlic
Garlic is a plant in the Allium (onion) family. It is closely related to onions, shallots, and leeks. Each segment of a garlic bulb is called a clove. There are about 10–20 cloves in a single bulb, give or take.

Strength:
- India is the 2nd largest producer of garlic.
- Madhya Pradesh is the 1st Largest Producer of Garlic in India.
- Total Garlic production in Madhya Pradesh is 2016 MT with 62 % contribution in total garlic produce in the country.
- Garlic is the third largest spice in MP in terms of the area under cultivation
- With the government investing heavily in the market linkage for agricultural produce, Garlic is one of the focus crops for the state
- Major varieties grown in Madhya Pradesh are Yamuna Safed-3, Yamuna Safed-4 (G-323), Yamuna Safed-5 (G-189) and Agrifound Parvati-2 (G-408), G-282.
- It occupies approx. 21% of the total area under cultivation of spices in Madhya Pradesh.
Weakness:
- Lack of Infrastructure for cold Chain like Cold Store, Pack house and Reefer Vans, test laboratories.
- Farm Aggregation: Majority of the plantations including Garlic Plantation in Madhya Pradesh are small land holding. Investment into the aggregator segment for the crop can be huge business opportunity for the private sector.
- Farmer Education: Significant investment is required in education and relevant support services to give small & marginal farmers the necessary skills and knowledge to increase productivity, improve the quality of the produce and reduce waste
- Poor Market Linkage & Packaging Techniques for fresh produce.
- Farmers are Not Aware of the Standard Quality Norms Acceptable in International Markets.
- Grading & packing units for exports

- Growing export markets in Malaysia, UAE, USA, Bhutan, Nepal, Vietnam, Oman.
- Offering huge investment opportunities, Madhya Pradesh can lead the country in terms of Garlic and it’s by product.
