TIKAMGARH

Situated in the northern region of Madhya Pradesh, Tikamgarh District occupies a strategic geographical location, bordered by Uttar Pradesh to the north and Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh to the east.

The district benefits from decent transportation infrastructure, with the Tikamgarh railway station serving as a vital junction on the Jhansi-Kanpur rail route, facilitating connectivity to major cities like Jhansi and Bhopal.

National Highway 44 passes through the district, enhancing road connectivity to neighboring regions. While Tikamgarh does not have its own airport, the nearest major air transit hub is Gwalior Airport, approximately 180 kilometers away.

Tikamgarh's economic landscape is primarily driven by agriculture, with a focus on crops like wheat, pulses, and ginger. Ginger has been selected as Tikamgarh's One District One Product due to the region's conducive climatic conditions, fertile soil, and expertise in ginger cultivation.

This initiative aims to capitalize on Tikamgarh's agricultural strengths, promote sustainable farming practices, empower local farmers, and position the district as a leading producer of high-quality ginger in the region.

● One District One Product Ginger, Madhya Pradesh

Ginger-

Ginger grows best in a sheltered location, filtered sunlight, warm weather, humidity, and rich, moist soil. Purchase rhizomes (ginger roots) that have ‘eyes’ (they look like tiny horns) and soak rhizomes overnight in cool water the night before planting.

Plant in late winter or early spring in prepared soil. Plant 3 inches deep with eyes facing upwards. Each rhizome can be broken apart to create more plants as long as each piece has an eye.

 Space rhizomes 4 inches apart. Keep soil moist and mist plants with water during times of drought. As a rule, most species of ginger thrive in moist soil Ginger grows slow and won’t be ready to harvest until the end of summer.

 As the weather starts cooling down, your ginger will start to die back. Reduce the water, even let the ground dry out. This encourages the ginger to form rhizomes. Once all the leaves have died down, the ginger is ready for harvest.

Strength-

1. India is the 2nd largest producer of ginger in the world after China.
2. Madhya Pradesh is the 1st Largest Producer of Ginger in India.
3. India is 2nd Largest exporter of ginger in the world after China.
4. Total Garlic production in Madhya Pradesh is approx. 692.11 MT with 31 % contribution in total production in the country.
5. With the government investing heavily in the market linkage for agricultural produce, Garlic is one of the focus crops for the state
6. Major varieties grown in Madhya Pradesh are Agrifound White (G-41), Yamuna Safed (G-1), Yamuna Safed-3 (G-282).

Weakness:

1. Lack of Infrastructure for cold Chain like Cold Store, Pack house and Reefer Vans, test laboratories.
2. Farm Aggregation: Majority of the plantations including Ginger Plantation in Madhya Pradesh are small land holding. Investment into the aggregator segment for the crop can be huge business opportunity for the private sector.

1. Farmer Education: Significant investment is required in education and relevant support services to give small & marginal farmers the necessary skills and knowledge to increase productivity, improve the quality of the produce and reduce waste
2. Poor Market Linkage & Packaging Techniques for fresh produce.
