Ujjain is ancient and historical city that is 5000 years old. The World famous Mahakaleshwar Temple is 2 Km away from the Ujjain Railway station and is spread over a large area on the banks of river Kshipra. This is the only Jyotirling that has south facing The district is not particularly known for its mineral resources compared to some other regions in Madhya Pradesh. However, it does have some minor deposits of minerals. These include: iron ore, Limestone, Quartz etc The district's industrial landscape is thriving, with sectors like metal industries, slate pencil imdustries, textiles, agro-processing, and pharmaceuticals leading the way. Alongside Vikram Udyogpuri is industrial area situated nearby the district. Ujjain's rich agricultural heritage further strengthens its economic foundation, with crops like opium and alkaloid works orange, wheat, soybean, and pulses contributing significantly to its agricultural output. In the realm of exports, the city has carved a niche for itself, particularly in the export of textiles and agricultural products. Under the One District One Product initiative, Ujjain district has embarked on a journey to uplift the traditional craft of Batik print, aiming to boost local artisans and revitalize the region's cultural heritage. Recent developments showcase a concerted effort towards this goal, with the establishment of skill development programs and artisan clusters dedicated to Batik production.

Batik Print: GI Product

Batik is a technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to whole cloth, or cloth made using this technique. Batik is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting, or by printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap. The district of Ujjain has good number of Batik Print Artists. Due to efforts by Sant Ravidas Madhya Pradesh Hastashilp Evam Hathkargha Vikas Nigam Limited, the art, and the product got a Geographical Indication tag for the district of Ujjain in 2023.

Geographical Indication product has huge potential in Exports. GI product has its own strength of branding and marketing. Since it is a textile product, there are not many challenges from the supply side.

Weakness:

The product has no specific HS code, so domestic turnover or export data is not available. The product has not developed its international market yet even Indian textile and handloom products havea huge market outside.

Opportunities:

Due to increased e-commerce and publicity of GI products, Batik Printhas a huge opportunity in the domestic and international markets. Processors are now equipped with export knowledge and will contribute to exports.

Threats:

In handloom products, there are many competitions from various field. There are always chances for duplicity and misinformation about the product in the market.
