Mandla district, nestled in the heart of India’s central state of Madhya Pradesh, is a region steeped in natural beauty and rich in resources. Geographically, it is distinguished by the presence of the Kanha National Park, a haven for wildlife and biodiversity, and the Narmada River, which meanders through the district providing vital water resources for agriculture and daily life.
Transportation in Mandla is primarily facilitated by road, with National Highway 30 and State Highway 26 serving as critical arteries that connect the district to major cities and markets. While Mandla itself lacks a railway station, the nearby cities of Jabalpur and Gondia offer railway connectivity to the rest of India. Air travel needs are met by Jabalpur Airport, which is the closest airport providing access to national and international destinations.
The district’s economy is bolstered by a mix of mining activities, industrial development, and agriculture. Mining operations contribute to the industrial landscape with the extraction of various minerals. Industrial development is further supported by the production and export of FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Container) bags and soybean products, which have become significant contributors to Mandla’s economic output.
Agriculture remains a cornerstone of Mandla’s economy, with fertile lands yielding a variety of crops. The district has gained recognition for its Kodo Kutki Millet, which has been selected as Mandla’s ‘One district one product’ due to its high nutritional value and adaptability to the local climate. This initiative aims to promote this traditional grain, support local farmers, and introduce Kodo Kutki Millet to new markets, thereby fostering sustainable agricultural practices and economic growth.
Mandla’s commitment to leveraging its geographic advantages, enhancing its transportation networks, diversifying its industrial base, and promoting sustainable agriculture through initiatives like ‘One district one product’ demonstrates a strategic approach to economic development that promises continued prosperity for the region.
Kodo: Kodo millet is rich in fiber, protein, B vitamins, calcium, iron, and magnesium, making it a wholesome dietary choice. Its culinary versatility is evident in dishes like dosas, idlis, upma, and porridge. In recent years, there has been a resurgence in millet cultivation due to its health benefits and climate-resilient nature, contributing to sustainable agriculture and food security efforts. It is part of the Millet – Sri Anna – Mission of the Government of India. Kutki: Kutki Millet is a small-grained, drought-resistant cereal crop that has been traditionally grown in hilly terrains and is well-suited for high-altitude environments. Kutki millet is known for its resilience in harsh climates, making it a valuable crop for mountainous regions where other crops might struggle. Like other millets, it is valued for its nutritional content and is a source of dietary fiber, protein, and essential nutrients. It is part of the Millet – Sri Anna – Mission of the Government of India.

Strength-
India is the world's largest millet-producing country. Due to high health benefits, the demand of millet is rising rapidly. UN observed the year 2023 as 'Millet Year' and the Government of India celebrates Millet Year as Sri Anna year. So several measures have been adopted to promote millets in India and the world. Madhya Pradesh is one of the producers of millet in India.
Weakness:
The export of both products is less than one crore. So no export market is developed for both products.
Opportunities:
Due to increased e-commerce and publicity of millets, Kodo Kutki have a huge opportunity in the domestic and international markets. Farmers and processors are now equipped with export knowledge and will contribute to exports.
Threats:
Agro products are subject to quality, taste, and cultural aspects. If the product cannot absorbed in local culture, there will be no development in Exports.

Mandla's Kodo Kutki industry is experiencing a surge in growth and recognition, propelled by concerted efforts under the One District One Product initiative.
Most recently, on January 17th, 2024, during a visit to Narayanganj region, the Collector of Mandla commended the remarkable efforts of Self-Help Group (SHG) women. She particularly praised the Vashundhara Ajeevika SHG for establishing a Kodo Kutki processing unit and urged further expansion. Additionally, she advocated for the establishment of a hall for cluster-level federations, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure for the industry's growth. Her visit also encompassed exploration of chicken farming and animal husbandry units, highlighting the holistic approach towards rural development.
This commitment to promoting local produce was further underscored on January 11th, 2024, when the Collector urged the district Forest Medicinal processing and sales center to prioritize One District One Product (ODOP) items and enhance women's participation through SHGs.
In a bid to showcase the versatility of Kodo Kutki, a millet food festival was organized on February 23rd, 2024, featuring stalls offering various cuisines crafted from the millet. The event also integrated cultural elements, with artists participating in music and poetry evenings, creating a vibrant celebration of local produce.
Prioritizing agricultural advancements, on September 18th, 2023, the Collector emphasized the promotion of Kodo Kutki and Ragi crops at the Atma governing board meeting. She advocated for farmer education on modern agricultural practices and encouraged participation in agricultural exhibitions to stay abreast of developments.
Such initiatives are bolstered by a directive issued on January 4th, 2023, mandating the use of millet products in government meetings and the organization of events to commemorate the International Millet Year, fostering greater awareness and appreciation for Mandla's agricultural heritage. Through these collective endeavors, Mandla's Kodo Kutki industry is poised for sustained growth and prosperity, driving socio-economic upliftment in the region.
